Hi I’m Tonya Harvey, I became a doula because I love the gift of life and I’m a caretaker by nature. I have literally been taking care of people my entire life. At the age of seven I used to help my mother care for elderly people in our home. It was my mother who first showed me compassion through examples and I knew then I was going to be in healthcare in some capacity. In 1992 I became a Certified Patient Care Tech, that has me in healthcare now for 30 years. I worked full-time at Shepherd Center for 10 years. The Shepherd Center is a specialty hospital that takes care of people suffering from catastrophic spinal injuries and traumatic brain injuries. I am now doing home health care. I have 4 children of my own and was extremely overjoyed at the birth of each one. Like myself and many other women, I allowed the healthcare team to make all of my childbirth decisions. However knowing what doulas do and why is the reason I became a doula. I’m ready and excited to support women with having the best birthing experience possible.
